What an ENT specialist is actually called
Search results throw up ear nose throat drs, ENT surgeons and otolaryngologists as if they were different professions. They are not, so it is worth clearing up first. An ENT specialist, an ear nose and throat doctor and an otolaryngologist are all the same thing. The full formal term is otorhinolaryngologist — oto (ear), rhino (nose), laryngo (throat). Nobody says it out loud.
Within the field you may also see narrower titles, which describe a sub-interest rather than a different qualification:

When you actually need an ENT doctor
Plenty of ear, nose and throat complaints settle on their own. These are the ones worth booking for:
Sudden hearing loss in one ear should be assessed within days, not weeks — treatment started early has a far better chance of working. A nosebleed that will not stop, difficulty breathing, or a swallowed or inhaled foreign body should go straight to a hospital emergency department rather than waiting for a clinic slot.
How to choose an ENT doctor near you
Proximity matters, but it is not the only thing. Five questions worth asking before you book:
- What are their qualifications? Look for MS (ENT) or DNB (ENT) after MBBS. Additional recognition such as MNAMS and membership of bodies like the Association of Otolaryngologists of India indicates ongoing engagement with the field.
- Will the specialist examine you personally? At larger hospitals you may see a rotating registrar. Ask.
- Is endoscopy available in the room? A great deal of ENT cannot be diagnosed with a torch. If the nose, throat or ear needs a scope and the clinic has none, you will be referred elsewhere and pay twice.
- Do they operate? A surgeon who also runs the clinic can carry you through from diagnosis to surgery without a handover.
- Will they tell you when not to have surgery? The most useful answer is often that an operation is not needed.

What happens at your first visit
A first consultation usually runs 15 to 30 minutes, longer if endoscopy, a hearing test or allergy testing is done in the same sitting. The sequence is straightforward: your symptoms and history are discussed, the relevant area is examined — usually with a scope, shown to you on screen — and you leave with a written plan.
Bring any previous prescriptions, scan or X-ray reports, audiograms, and a list of the medicines you currently take. If you are coming specifically for allergy testing, antihistamines normally need stopping five to seven days beforehand, so mention it when you book.

Clinic hours are Monday to Saturday, 11 AM–2 PM and 6 PM–8:30 PM. The clinic is closed on Sundays. If you are searching for an ENT open on Sunday, the honest answer is that this clinic is not — but a Monday morning or Saturday evening slot can usually be arranged, and genuine emergencies should go to a hospital emergency department in any case.
The consultation fee is confirmed when you book. Procedures such as endoscopy, audiometry or allergy testing are charged separately and the cost is explained before anything is carried out, so there are no surprises at the desk.
