When should I see an ENT specialist?
Some symptoms are worth acting on rather than waiting out. Book an appointment for:
- Hoarseness lasting more than three weeks — particularly if you smoke.
- A neck lump persisting beyond three weeks, especially if painless and firm.
- A mouth ulcer that has not healed in three weeks, especially with any tobacco use.
- Hearing loss, or a blocked ear that has not cleared in a couple of weeks.
- A nose blocked for more than three months, or recurring sinus infections.
- Vertigo — particularly episodes triggered by head movement.
- Snoring with witnessed pauses in breathing, in adults or children.
- A lump in front of the ear or below the earlobe, however painless.
Attend a hospital emergency department for a nosebleed that will not stop, difficulty breathing, a swallowed or inhaled foreign body, or significant facial or neck injury. Sudden hearing loss in one ear is urgent — treatment within the first two weeks substantially improves the chance of recovery, so call the clinic and say it is sudden hearing loss.

What should I bring? Previous prescriptions, scan or X-ray reports, audiograms, and a list of your current medicines. If you are coming for allergy testing, note that antihistamines usually need stopping about five to seven days beforehand — confirm this when booking.

Questions about children
My child snores every night — is that normal? No. Regular loud snoring in a child warrants assessment, usually for enlarged tonsils and adenoids. In children this often shows up as hyperactivity, poor concentration and behavioural difficulty rather than daytime sleepiness, so it is frequently missed. See snoring and sleep apnea.
How many ear infections are too many? Recurrent infections, or fluid persisting behind the eardrum for more than about three months with hearing loss, should be assessed. Glue ear makes a child hear as though underwater and commonly presents as inattention at school.
When should a child's hearing be tested? At any age where there is a concern — there is no minimum. Test if your child is not responding to sound, has delayed speech, turns the television up or seems inattentive.
Will removing tonsils weaken my child's immunity? No clinically meaningful weakening has been shown. Tonsils are one part of a much larger immune system. See tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.
Questions about surgery
Where is surgery performed? Minor and day-care procedures at the Sector 82A clinic; major surgery at Fortis Hospital, Manesar.
Can I get a second opinion? Yes, and it is a common reason for consultation — particularly for tonsillectomy, septoplasty and sinus surgery. Bring your existing reports and scans.
Will ENT surgery leave a visible scar? Usually not. Septoplasty, sinus surgery and tonsillectomy are performed entirely through the nostrils or mouth with no external incisions. Ear surgery uses an incision inside the canal or hidden in the crease behind the ear. Parotid and neck surgery incisions are placed in natural skin creases.
How soon can I return to work? Roughly one to two weeks for septoplasty and ear surgery, about two weeks for parotid surgery and tonsillectomy in adults. Jobs involving heavy lifting or dusty environments need longer.
Is surgery always necessary? No, and a good deal of the consultation is spent establishing whether it is. Most ENT conditions are managed medically. Surgery is recommended when it will genuinely change the outcome.
